Marina Sakellakis is a saxophonist, woodwind specialist, and educator from the New York City area. As a classical saxophonist, she has played in Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall and participated in masterclasses across the United States and Switzerland. She is an advocate for new music and has premiered works written by her composer colleagues at the University of Michigan. She recently traveled to London to collaborate in an experimental music and dance performance as part of the Trinity CoLab. As a doubler, Marina frequently plays oboe, flute/ piccolo, saxophones, and clarinet professionally in numerous pit orchestras, local orchestras, and chamber ensembles.
Marina recently completed her undergraduate degree with the highest distinction at the University of Michigan. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Woodwind Performance concentratingin saxophone, where she studied with the esteemed performer Dr. Timothy McAllister, and a minor in Performing Arts Management and Entrepreneurship. She was involved with the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance’s EXCEL program and traveled to New York City and London as part of their music industry immersion programs. Her other university administrative experiences included serving as the Marketing and Development Chair for the Campus Orchestras’ Board and acting as a Peer Educator in Sexual Violence Education and Empowerment on campus. As a music educator she volunteered as a saxophone and general music instructor for Seven Mile Music, which included traveling to Detroit weekly to teach children music and interpersonal skills.
Marina is passionate about education and collaboration, and she will attend the University of Texas at Austin in 2021 to work towards her Master’s degree in Saxophone Performance with the renowned Dr. Stephen Page and earn a certificate in Arts Leadership.
