University of Massachusetts-Amherst, New York
At age 9, Stephanie Miley was too small to play an alto saxophone, so she began her music journey with a soprano . Shortly after, at age 11, she began playing the piano. Miley spent her adolescence involved in saxophone quartets, wind ensembles, jazz ensembles, pitt bands, her high school’s marching band, and the Long Island Nassau- Suffolk Performing Arts ensembles. In her junior year of high school, she got accepted into the Ithaca College Summer Music Academy. There, she was chosen to play a solo recital, where she performed Tableaux De Provence. It was during this performance that she realized she wanted to do this for the rest of her life. For her senior year, she was on the Tri-M Music Honor Society executive board. On this board, she ran a concert to raise money for cancer research, and planned a concert at a school for children with disabilities. Her favorite past times include attending the Village Vanguard and Jazz Standard Standard in New York City.
In 2018, Stephanie began attending the University of Massachusetts- Amherst, pursuing a dual degree in saxophone performance and music education, under the direction of Jonathan HultingCohen. Pursuing a psychology minor, she hopes to one day work with children with disabilities. At Amherst, she has played soprano, alto, and bari saxophone in classical ensembles and saxophone quartets. Currently, Stephanie is working on her junior recital where she will be performing the Ibert Concertino da Camera, Schumann’s Three Romances, and Andrea Clearfield’s Unremembered Wings. Since Covid-19 cancelled her plans to attend the SaarburgFestival last summer, she hopes to attend it this summer or study abroad in Italy. Later, when she graduates from her undergraduate degree, she will be pursuing her plans to attend a graduate school for her masters in music performance.
