CGE 2021-22 Mentee
Kaylin Brown
Kaylin Brown, a native of Birmingham, Alabama, strives to promote innovative ideas through her music and believes that collaboration is the key to enhanced creativity. She brings awareness to this idea through KayBStudios, her business established in the summer of 2021. Her mission for this platform is to “cultivate creativity in the community.” Since starting her business, Kaylin has collaborated with producers, rappers, singers, and instrumentalists throughout the south, ranging from up-and-coming players to Grammy Award winning artists.
A saxophonist, Kaylin has taken pride in being a musician since the age of seven. She describes her style as smooth and groovy and enjoys playing in the pocket the most. She believes that the saxophone can enhance any musical setting and hopes to bring positive vibes to everyone who listens to her play. A senior working toward a Bachelor of Arts in music performance at Alabama State University, Kaylin considers it a privilege to have served as the assistant section leader of ASU’s Mighty Marching Hornet saxophone section in addition to being the first female lead in the school’s Jazz Combo under the direction of Isaac Bell.
Kaylin enjoys learning from those who came before her, having been mentored by legendary artists of Birmingham. Her father was a pastor and activist in the community, and growing up, she and her two brothers were encouraged to operate in their gifts by their mother, a skilled and respected Gospel singer and teacher. Kaylin is inspired by the deep creativity of children, believing that it comes from a genuinely unrestricted place. She mentors elementary-aged to high-school students, seeking to bring awareness to music’s endless possibilities. She enjoys spending time watching the development of her own son’s interest in music and hopes to inspire him to follow whatever passion is in his heart.
