CGE 2023-24 Mentee
Krista Whinnie
Krista Whinnie is a second-year student at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She has been playing saxophone for eight years, majoring in Music Education with a concentration in Instrumental Music. Her passion and determination to learn and teach music have led her to participate in several honor bands including an invitation to All-District Bands. Krista is recognized as one of only two students in the past 13 years from her High School to attend this event.
Throughout High School, Krista has held many leadership positions in her band including Drum major, and attended the George N. Parks Drum Major Academy. Her hard work and persistence have earned her awards such as the John Philip Sousa Award and the Semper Fidelis Award. In her spare time, she is no stranger to multi-tasking, having worked with a local children’s community theater as a costume designer for the last 10 years, and balancing a softball schedule since the age of 7. Krista was raised in the Concord area of North Carolina and graduated from Concord High School with her diploma through the International Baccalaureate program. During college, she has been on the marching band staff for Providence and Concord High Schools. She has a strong passion for inclusiveness in music and strives towards including minority-written musical pieces into her repertoire. Krista’s current goals are to help develop the growth of students through music while creating a new culture that welcomes new works in music composed by women and minorities.
